All arts classes are graded using a custom rubric based on the National Core Arts Standards and the Studio Habits of Mind framework developed by Harvard Project Zero. Studio Habits of Mind empower students to articulate their learning in any subject, and provide an entry point for learning based on individual choice. This year we’ve shifted our arts classes to ensure greater continuity for our younger students, opportunities for better scaffolding the PK-8 trajectory through the arts, and more exposure for middle school students to all arts informed by their interests. Our PK-8 curriculum includes visual arts, drama, and music as core subjects, while middle school students can also explore band, media arts, and choir. Elements of arts integration may include field trips to Chicago’s cultural institutions, in-school performances by arts organizations, and integrated units taught in collaboration with artists-in-residence. While each project varies, a collaboration between the arts team and classroom teachers is essential to ensuring that arts integrated projects meet objectives in both academic and artistic subjects. Our arts-integrated academic philosophy emphasizes teaching the whole child, while our trajectory of PK-8 arts classes offers students the opportunity to explore and build skills in several artistic subjects throughout their elementary and middle school experiences.Īrts Integration is a way of teaching our preschool-eighth grade academic subjects through the arts. Graduates of the Art Education program find employment in K-12 education and a wide variety of other arts institutions across the country, as well as to become self-sustaining artists.AACA has two complementary programs of arts education- our PK-8 arts classes and our arts integrated academic courses. Students also have the opportunity to participate in AmeriCorps programs.Īnother strength of the program is the close supportive community of students and faculty that reach beyond campus to include alumni, artists, and educators across the field of art design and education. Community involvement includes opportunities in direct arts outreach, afterschool clubs and programs, and volunteer positions with local arts organizations and programs. Advanced students have the opportunity to participate in professional development workshops with local, national, and international artist educators. Partly because the articles and videos already out there are mostly aimed at K-5 & K-12 Art teachers. Art Costa, are 16 critical thinking, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills that 21st-century students will need to build tomorrow’s world. One of the program’s greatest strengths is our emphasis on collaborative learning through "real life" experience. She directs the TAB Summer Teacher Institute and is an instructor in MassArts Department of Art Education for the Saturday Studios youth programs. and a retired art teacher following 25 years in K-8 public education. Students learn to develop engaging art curriculum founded on big ideas, studio habits of mind, and inquiry-based learning. The framework shines a light on those broad thinking dispositions, or habits of mind, that visual arts teachers teach in their classes. The program is founded on creative thinking strategies, visual literacy, essential contemporary skills, and innovative studio practices. It is our core belief that a teacher’s art making practice and teaching practice mutually inform each other. There are many authentic ways to use The Studio Habits of Mind regardless of your students’ ages or artistic levels. The Art Education emphasis area at Utah State University is unique in that students earn a Bachelors of Fine Arts, which reflects the emphasis area's commitment to training students to become excellent teachers and accomplished artists.
